in the race for the Texas 22nd District according to a ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Texas Republicans had wanted Delay’s name replaced on the ballot as he has resigned from Congress and is awaiting trial for money laundering and conspiracy charges. DeLay will face Democrat Nick Lampson, profiled on DoubleSpeak’s Episode 2.
has ruled that former Representative Tom DeLay (R-TX) must remain on the November ballot despite his resignation from Congress last month. This is huge for Nick Lampson, DeLay’s Democratic opponent.
reports TIME magazine. The corrupt and disgraced former House Majority Leader who was facing a tough challenge from DoubleSpeak guest, former Rep. Nick Lampson, as well as a host of legal problems will resign and leave Congress. Hopefully the first in many resignations from the weakened GOP.
Pointed out by our friend politicaljam, a great catch from Kos. Things sure are crazy down in Sugarland, TX these days. Good thing our guest on Episode 2, Nick Lampson, is down there to set things right.
“Right now, I wouldn’t vote Democratic if Jesus Christ was running.” Judy Deats, a Texas Republican, who is standing by Rep. Tom DeLay in his re-election bid despite the fact that his association with lobbyist Jack Abramoff has made him vulnerable to political opposition for the first time in more than 20 years.
Said Markos, “I’m glad she realizes that Jesus would be a Democrat.”

Game on, Mr. DeLay. Game on.
UPDATE: Congressional Quarterly agrees, moving the Texas 22nd from “Leans Republican” to “No Clear Favorite.”
While Disgraced Congressman Tom DeLay (R-TX) prevailed in the Republican primary last night, don’t let that fool you. Tom DeLay is not safe. In fact, I’d go further to say that this small victory for DeLay was a good thing. By the time November rolls around, DeLay will be so beaten and bruised that Nick Lampson, a moderate Democrat whose ideas are all in the right place will be able to beat him in the general election.
Moreover, DeLay will probably be in jail by the time the November election takes place.
News reports suggest that Nick Lampson has raised over two million dollars thus far; however, he’ll need plenty more. While DoubleSpeak is not a fundraising apparatus, we do refer our listeners to our Act Blue page and you can chose to donate to candidates who either need help or who we feel are solid, progressive, fighting Democrats. Have a look.

TOM DELAY MUG SHOT:

It’s a big day in Texas politics. Corruptocrat Tom DeLay, who still can’t figure out that partying all night long with lobbyists looks really bad, is up against both a Republican challenger and our preferred candidate Nick Lampson. We’ve been following this race for a while, interviewing Mr. Lampson recently, and we just can’t wait to see the end of DeLay’s reign of incompetence. CQPolitics will be covering this election in real time starting at 8 pm EST (7 PM Central) this evening.
Also keep your eyes on the Texas 28th where netroots favorite and Real Democrat Ciro Rodriguez hopes to upset Rep. Henry Cuellar, who you may remember as a huge Bush fan. Keep your fingers crossed.
