Former Vice President Al Gore responded today to the White House and Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez’s comments regarding his speech in which he called for a special counsel to investigate the legal issues surrounding the President’s extra-constitutional NSA wiretapping.
“The Administration’s response to my speech illustrates perfectly the need for a special counsel to review the legality of the NSA wiretapping program.
The Attorney General is making a political defense of the President without even addressing the substantive legal questions that have so troubled millions of Americans in both political parties.”
The administration continues to pretend that there is no issue here, but every defense they offer up, from the slowness of the FISA courts to the supposed congressional authorization implicit in the Afghanistan war declaration has been shown over and over again to be false.
