Deval Patrick

Deval Patrick was born into a poor family in Chicago’s South Side. He grew up in a one-bedroom apartment and he often tells the story of how he had to rotate from bed to bed, spending every third night sleeping on the floor. While in middle school, one of his teachers referred him to A Better Chance, a national non-profit organization for identifying, recruiting and developing leaders among academically gifted students of color, which enabled him to attend Milton Academy in Massachusetts.

Deval attended Harvard College in 1978. After Harvard, he worked with the United Nations in Africa. In 1979, Deval returned to the United States and enrolled at Harvard Law School.

In 1994, Clinton nominated Deval to be Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. From 1999 to 2004, Deval Patrick worked as an executive vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary of the Coca-Cola Company. He has been credited with building a strong grassroots campaign that helped him handedly win a crowded primary in early September.
