Hagel Takes A Stand

Chuck Hagel

Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), who will likely seek the Republican nomination in 2008, commented on Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and his handling of the war in Iraq during a conference call with reporters. Right on, Chuck.

The concern I’ve had is, at a very dangerous time, (the) secretary of defense does not command the respect and confidence of our men and women in uniform.

There is a real question about his capacity to lead at this critical time.

I have had many conversations with military leaders about their concern about what’s happening at the Pentagon and with our force structure.

  • Actually, Senator Hagel was on record as calling for Rumsfeld's replacement more than a year ago.

  • I agree. I'm not rooting him on b/c he's saying anything novel, i'm simply highlighting that he is the only Republican running for president who has the balls to actually disagree with Bush. Where is McCain?

  • I don't see why Hagel should be commended for FINALLY saying what many Dems and others have been saying for years now. It's all well and good to jump on the anti-Rummy bandwagon at the end of the pile on, but it's nothing to be honored for. Welcome to reality.
